Cleaning Vinyl Floors
Everything you ever wanted to know about cleaning vinyl floors
Cleaning vinyl floors is simple and not unlike cleaning other types of floors. One of the easiest ways to start cleaning vinyl floors in your home is to vacuum or use a dust mop. This should be done at least once or twice a week. Just beware of vacuums that have a beater bar because they can scratch your floor. Also don’t forget to change the setting on your vacuum to the lightest one possible. After all, shag carpet needs a lot more suction than hard floors do. Vacuuming and using a dust mop regularly will cut down on how many clumps of dust collect on your floor. It will also keep your floors clean on the very surface and cut down on wear and tear of the flooring.
Of course cleaning vinyl floors also involves wet mopping, and you should do this about once a week after you use a dust mop on the floor. Any floor cleaning liquid will do, although if you mop your floor often enough, you will find that you may only need some warm water. After you mop, don’t forget to dry your floors with a clean towel. This will ensure that your vinyl floors don’t end up feeling sticky. Of course if you only use warm water, then you can just let the floor air dry because sticky floors won’t be a problem.
Cleaning vinyl floors is also a regular part of every day when things are spilled on them. Always wipe up any spills right away so they don’t have time to stain the floor. After you mop up the spill with a towel, then use warm water and a soft cloth to ensure the area is truly clean.
Sometimes cleaning vinyl floors requires waxing, especially if the floor is made of PVC vinyl. You should keep a supply of wax on hand at all times and use it after any spills and after you wet mop the floor. The manufacturer of your floor will have a recommendation when it comes to what kind of wax you should use.
Another important thing to remember about cleaning vinyl floors is that the cleaner you keep them, the easier it will be to repair any tears or gouges that occur. Installation professionals can repair vinyl floors that get a tear in them, but it’s very difficult to repair them correctly if there is a lot of dirt in the area that’s torn. It’s always best to keep your floors clean so you can prevent this. If you do happen to get a gouge in your vinyl floor, then simply cover it up with a towel until someone can come repair it. Also remember to use common sense when it comes to moving things across your vinyl floor. Pick up heavy furniture instead of sliding it across the floor, and take your shoes off while you’re inside the house to cut down on how much dirt is deposited on your floor.
